The Southern Power Corporation (EVN SPC) has upgraded its system to ensure power supply reliability, meeting the needs of trade and production and improving people’s living conditions.

Southern power sector strives for reliable power supply
Ensuring reliable power supply
Power load has continuously increased in 21 southern provinces and cities. In the whole region, commercial power output reached 66.5 billion kWh in 2018, an increase of nearly 10.1 percent compared to the previous year. The highest daily output reached 213.95 million kWh and the largest consumption capacity reached 10,430MW.
Nguyen Phuoc Duc, general director of the EVN SPC, said power system capacity in the region has improved significantly, benefitting production, industry, agriculture, trade and services. In 2018, the system average interruption duration index (SAIDI) reached 708.11 minutes, while the momentary average interruption frequency index (MAIFI) reached 0.42 times.
Implementing power projects
The EVN SPC has put into operation a supervisor control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, which is used to operate, supervise, control and monitor power grids. The system has helped the corporation improve the efficiency and reliability of the distribution network in 21 cities and provinces in the southern region of Vietnam.
The EVN SPC manages around 200 110kV substations with several ten thousand kilometers of transmission and distribution lines. In the past, when failures occurred in the power grid, technicians had to rely on customer information or manual detection to identify the causes and locations of failures. At present, with the SCADA control system, dispatchers are likely to promptly discover and warn about failures via the alarm system of the control software, which helps lessen the length of repair and enables prompt and safe service resumption.
In 2019, the EVN SPC continues to promote the application of science and technology, build annual power supply plans, develop more unmanned substations, apply hotline repairing and cleaning technology, and implement solutions related to management, operation and automation of power grids.
The EVN SPC has also directed member power companies to strengthen coordination with local authorities in building power supply plans and developing projects to cope with imbalance of power supply and demand, improve customer care services and provide online services according to customer needs.
The EVN SPC has set a target of automating all its substations and connecting by remote control more than 90 percent of the switchgear and equipment indicating incidents on the medium voltage power grid by 2020. It is also targeting connecting the data of the electronic remotely read meters of distribution substations and boundaries between units to exploit the functionality on the SCADA system.
