Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Hoang Trung Hai urged the implementation of projects of which progress was slow in the electricity planning VI. In 2010, the country is expected to have 14 more electricity projects with a total operation capacity of 3,335 MW.

Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai assessed that the electricity planning VI greatly contributed to the development of the local electricity sector over the past few years. In recent years, the local electricity sector had an annual capacity of more than 3,000 MW.

In fact, a number of electricity projects are making slow progress. Among 40 projects which are being carried out, 7 projects are three months overdue, 3 projects are six months overdue, and 2 projects are in excess of nine months overdue.

Among them are some significant projects which ensure sufficient power for the dry season, including the Cam Pha I, Quang Ninh I, Hai Phong I, and Son Dong.

Of 14 projects which will be operational in 2010, there are some projects with high capacity such as the Quang Ninh Thermo-electricity (600 MW), the Hai Phong Thermo-electricity (600 MW), the Son La Hydroelectricity (400 MW), the Ban Ve Hydroelectricity (300 MW), and the Cam Pha II Thermoelectricity (300MW).

Deputy PM commented that the major reason for the slow progress is a result of limitation factors for investors, contractors, and consultants as well inadequacies in investment policies.

Trial operations of thermoelectricity projects often last longer than planned, particularly the coal-fired thermoelectricity plants in the North.

Deputy PM also asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to investigate the list of urgent projects in Hanoi to submit to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for approval to ensure sufficient power for the Thang Long – Hanoi 1,000th Anniversary.
