Conference of Partners on Low Carbon Energy for ASEAN in Vietnam

In the afternoon of November 20 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom (UK) organized a conference of partners on implementing the Low Carbon Energy Program for ASEAN.

The UK Low Carbon Energy Program 2019-2022 (LCEP) for ASEAN is a support program of the UK Prosperous Fund for assisting ASEAN countries to harness the benefits from the low carbon energy deployment through UK technical support on Green Finance and Energy Efficient Use. The Carbon Trust is the partner of implementing technical assistance for the component of Energy Efficient Use.
 
At the conference, the consultant presented the foreseen contents to support Vietnam through the LCEP. Relevant agencies also had the opportunity to discuss and contribute ideas to rapidly complete the Implementation Plan of LCEP to report to the clue agencies of Vietnam and UK for submitting it to the competent authorities for approving and early putting into implementation. The UK Department of Foreign Affairs and Vietnam MOIT will share the professional knowledge and skills in many activities funded by the UK Government with focusing on low carbon energy and energy efficient use.
 
Speaking at the conference, the Deputy Minister of MOIT Hoang Quoc Vuong said: ensuring the energy supply is an urgent task of each country, but improving the quality of energy use is a long-term strategic task, it will bring the economic, environmental efficiency, ability to cope with climate change and for sustainable development. According to Mr. Hoang Quoc Vuong the LCEP is very useful for Vietnam due to its contents are suitable to the requirements and tasks of the Vietnam National Program on energy saving and efficient use in the 2019-2030 period.

MOIT Deputy Minister also informed that recognizing the importance of energy saving and efficient use, Vietnam has implemented the National Target Program on energy saving and efficient use from 2006 to 2015 with the results as saving 3.4% and 5.65% of energy demand equal to 4.9 million tons and 11.2 million tons of oil equivalent respectively in 2006-2010 and 2012-2015 periods. The energy consumption rates of steel, cement, textile, chemical… industries have been clearly reduced.
 
At present, Vietnam tries the best to reach the energy saving and efficient use targets in 2019 – 2030 period as saving 5-7% and 8 -10 % of energy demand respectively to 2025 and 2030. To reach these targets, Vietnam needs the attention and companion of the whole domestic society, the support of the international community, sponsors, development partners…
 
At the end, Deputy Minister Hoang Quoc Vuong high appreciated the timely support of the LCEP for Vietnam energy sector and thanked the UK government agencies,
 
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy in Hanoi, and UK Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward for their much attention to the LCEP for Vietnam. Mr. Vuong also expressed his desire to continuously receive a support for the Program to achieve the best results and for strengthening the long-term cooperation between the two countries in general, and between the UK Department of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam in particular.
