The 6-megawatt Phu Quy windpower plant on Phu Quy island in central Binh Thuan province began operation.

The plant, funded by the PetroVietnam Power Corporation, is the first in Viet Nam to use both wind and diesel generation. Built at a cost of VND335 billion (US$17 million), it includes three turbines and is forecast to generate 25.4 million kWh a year.

The plant will ease the current power shortage for 27,000 residents on the island and fuel socio-economic development.
