Power sector undergoes transformation
Nguyen Van Vy, deputy chair of the Vietnam Energy Association, said the power sector has reached an advanced regional level of science and technology, with various research results successfully applied in trade and production.
Specifically, scientific and technological achievements have helped turbine units of coal-fired thermal power plants achieve capacity of 600-660MW, while roller compacted concrete technology has been used in building hydropower plants. In addition, modern and advanced technologies have helped reduce power losses to less than eight percent.
The Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has also put into operation a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) automatic energy management system that monitors power outages and restoration in the National Load Dispatch Center and its subsidiaries, contributing to the safe operation of the power grid.
According to the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the power sector has strengthened technology transfer and mastered advanced technologies to serve the development of power sources, grids and operation, regulation, information and telecommunication systems.
For example, the Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation (EEMC) has mastered the technology needed to design and manufacture 220kV-500kV transformers, with quality similar to products of European countries, making Vietnam the first Southeast Asian country to manufacture 500kV transformers.
In addition, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering has successfully manufactured a number of synchronous equipment systems for the thermal power sector, such as electrostatic precipitators (ESP). The research and manufacturing of ESP has also contributed to increasing the local content of equipment at thermal power plants.
EVN has set a general target of reaching the development level of the group of leading ASEAN countries by 2020 in terms of science and technology, and an advanced international level in most trade and production fields and customer services by 2030. The state-owned company wants to mobilize science and technology resources effectively, contributing to increasing labor productivity in EVN in order to surpass the national average level by two times.
The power sector plans to raise funds for the development and application of modern power source and grid technologies, and promote high-tech application in trade and customer services.
