Uttarakhand to buy 500 electric buses as trial run achieves success
Happy with the feedback received from the trial run of electric bus between Doon and Mussoorie, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) is now mulling to add 500 such buses to its fleet.
Speaking to TOI, UTC general manager Deepak Jain said that if everything goes according to the plan, the corporation will have a fleet of 500 electric buses in the next three years.
"We have been conducting test runs of the bus for 20 days now and have not witnessed any complexities. The bus has plied on a 35-km route without any problem. We will do a trial run on the Nainital-Haldwani route next month.”
He added that in the first phase, the state will buy 51 buses and in the next three years, all the 500 buses will be procured. “We have around 1,000 buses right now and we want to raise the number to 1,500. All the new buses will be running in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode,” he said.
Ashish Singh, a resident of Sahastradhara, said, “If the electric buses are brought in, it will help reduce pollution. We hope that soon, all the public transport mediums are converted into eco-friendly systems.”
