Tan See Leng highlighted that the move, part of Singapore’s plan to import 4-6 GW of clean energy from regional nations by 2035, would assist the island state to achieve its net-zero target by 2050.
Renewable energy generated offshore Vietnam is set for delivery to Singapore via underwater cable.
Do Duc Duy emphasized the cooperation would become a milestone of Vietnam-Singapore partnership.
In February 2023, Petrovietnam Technical Services Corp. (PTSC), the technical arm of state-run Petrovietnam, and Sembcorp Utilities, under Singaporean conglomerate Sembcorp Industries, signed an agreement to supply electricity directly to Singapore via an undersea cable from a 2.3 GW offshore wind power project.
In August 2023, PTSC was granted a permit for wind, marine and geological surveys for the project. In October 2023, Sembcorp received conditional approval from Singaporean authorities to import 1.2 GW of renewable electricity from Vietnam.
In August 2024, PTSC and Sembcorp Utilities said they would jointly conduct technical surveys for the project.
