The Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) has asked its subsidiaries to maximize power purchases from China to ensure sufficient power supply for the economy.

The increased electricity purchases are also intended to ensure supply for schools across the country that will host the three-day national high school graduation exams starting June 2, the state-run electricity monopoly said.

In April, EVN’s system produced an average of 366.5 million kWh on a daily basis, EVN said in its power production report for the first four months of this year.

The figure in March was 363 million kWh per day.

The four-month power sale by EVN to the industry and construction sectors increased 9.54 percent, while the respective rises for the service and public consumption sectors were 10.42 percent and 10.59 percent, the report said.

Total new investment by EVN in the year to April is estimated at US$1 billion, according to the report.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, EVN’s total debt and loan repayments in these four months was worth VND3.2 trillion, equal to 10.45 percent of the full-year target.

EVN has also approved the design and plan to invite bids for the first phase of construction of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant.
