Recently, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan, General Director and Mission of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and worked with Vinacomin leaders in Hanoi and Coal Northeast Corporation (CNC) in Quang Ninh, on coal supply for power generation, especially in the peak hot months of 2023.

Leaders of EVN worked with Vinacomin, in Hanoi.

The Power generation units in EVN have signed coal supply contracts for power generation in 2023 with Vinacomin by 17.98 million tons and with CNC by 7.05 million tons. Most of this volume is an imported coal blend.

According to EVN Deputy General Director Ngo Son Hai: In general, the coal supply situation in the first quarter of 2023 basically met the contract volume but still lacked compared to the actual requirements of the power system. The efforts of Vinacomin and CNC would contribute an important part to EVN in generating and supplying power for developing the economy and serving people's life.

The total electricity generated from coal in the beginning 4 months of 2023 reached 40.06 billion kWh (46.53 % of the total generated and imported electricity in the whole system), lower than the plan promulgated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT).

According to the EVN leader, at present, although coming to the peak hot dry season but electricity supply for the power system should be very stressful, hydrological development is not favorable, the water level in hydropower reservoirs lower than planned, and ensuring power supply, it is to mobilize power plants with the high electricity costs (with DO, FO fuels), many hydropower plants were exploited with the very low water level, even nearly the dead water level.

Leaders of EVN worked with the Northeast Corporation, in Quang Ninh.

To the new update plan, in May, June, and July, power generation of the thermal power plants will be mobilized at a high level, the generation of EVN-fired anthracite coal power plants in these 3 months should expect to be 14.77 billion kWh, requiring 7.17 million tons of coal, but contract total volume signed with Vinacomin and CNC is only 6.59 million tons. So EVN asks Vinacomin and CNC to supply coal in accordance with the signed contract and search for a solution to supply coal for power generation in accordance with the mobilization need of the power system in the next months.

EVN proposes Vinacomin and CNC decrease the coal supply for the other customers and dispute coal for power generation in quarter 2. The coal supply for the other customers will implement in the last months of the year.

EVN also asks Vinacomin and CNC to thoroughly understand and share about the difficulties in the financial situation of EVN for considering and adjusting the price of coal.

Mr. Do Manh Kham, CNC General Director emphasized that CNC senses its responsibility to ensure coal for power generation and guides the units to create maximum conditions to supply coal for power generation. However, CNC also meets many difficulties in coal exploitation so it is difficult to increase coal output.

Mr. Dang Thanh Hai, Vinacomin's General Director affirmed that Vinacomin will try its best to ensure the supply of coal for power generation at the same time he also expressed that the two sides regularly exchange information on production and business and timely solve difficulties in the cooperation process

Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan - EVN General Director thanked Vinacomin and CNC for their cooperation in recent years and hoped that in the dry season months of 2023, Vinacomin and CNC would ensure sufficient coal supply for power generation to serve the economic development of the country and people's daily life.

EVN General Director also expressed his hope that the parties would continue to closely coordinate, increase exchange and listen to constantly improve cooperation efficiency, towards the common goal of ensuring national energy security.
