Germany has allocated almost 2.4 GW of onshore wind capacity and an additional 512 MW of projects combining solar and energy storage technologies in its latest tenders.

The competition for onshore wind projects attracted 197 submitted bids for a total of 2,485 MW, marking the positive development of the industry and its expansion, the Federal Network Agency said on Wednesday. The tender round targeted 2,795 MW and awarded 2,379 MW after eight of the proposals were excluded. The agency noted that a similar level of bid volume has not been seen since the bidding rounds in 2017.

The winning bids ranged between EUR 0.072 (USD 0.0755) per kWh to EUR 0.0735 per kWh, with the volume-weighted average price standing at EUR 0.0733 (USD 0.088), mostly unchanged from the one in the previous call. The tender was capped at EUR 0.0735/kWh.

Regionally, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will host 727 MW of the allocated projects, accounting for 68 of the awards, while 430 MW and 318 MW will be installed in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, respectively.

In the latest innovation auction for solar or wind installations coupled with energy storage systems, Germany selected 512 MW of projects, all of which for solar-plus-storage capacity. The tendered capacity was 583 MW. The successful 43 bids were secured at between EUR 0.0678/kWh and EUR 0.0917/kWh. The average volume-weighted price of EUR 0.0833/kWh was below the EUR 0.0918/kWh cap and corresponds to the average registered in the previous bidding round.

Of the total allocated projects, 245 MW will be located in Bavaria, 79 MW in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 73 MW in Schleswig-Holstein.

The next onshore wind tender is due to be launched on August 1, while another round for innovation projects will open on September 1, 2024.
