It cost more than VNĐ270 billion (US$240.8 million) and took two years to build.

Using a modern supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, the centre manages the operations of the island’s two power plants, one diesel-fuelled and the other a wind plant.

The power grid has also been upgraded and expanded to meet the increasing demand for electricity, ensure steady and safe supply and modernise power distribution and management.

Trần Ngọc Linh, director of the Bình Thuận Province Electricity Corporation, said the island has a total electricity generation capacity of 16MW, 10MW from the diesel plant and 6MW from the wind power plant.

The centre would be a starting point for future projects such as solar and other power plants to meet demand, he said.

Power is now available 24 hours to all households on the island at the same tariffs as on the mainland.

Situated 120km from Phan Thiết City, Phú Quý Island spreads over an area of 17sq.km and has a population of 28,000 and great potential in the maritime economy and tourism.

Linh said reliable electricity supply is a pre-requisite to attract investment on the island.
