On 9 December Tianjin Alstom Hydro delivered the first runner - a core component of turbine units – for the 6×400MW units of the Son La power plant in Vietnam, the largest hydro power plant in South-East Asia with a planned capacity of 2400 MW

The successful delivery of the runner demonstrates Tianjin Alstom Hydro’s capability to design and manufacture medium and large hydro systems for domestic as well as Asia Pacific markets, in addition to providing a broad scope of other Hydro clean power solutions.

Under the terms of the contract, signed in October 2007, Alstom Hydro’s scope of supply includes design, engineering, manufacturing and delivery of six 400 MW Francis turbines and generators, BOP (Balance Of Plant) as well as training and supervision of installation, testing and commissioning.

The delivered runner weighs 210 tons, with a diameter of 8.3 meters, and a height of 3.83 meters.  With the support of Alstom Technology Centre in Grenoble, Tianjin Alstom Hydro optimized the manufacturing process, reducing production time significantly. This not only ensured the on-time delivery of the first runner, but also facilitated meeting the first unit’s commission scheduled in 2010

“We are particularly proud to demonstrate our capability to ensure our customer’s satisfaction by delivering on time the first runner. EVN placed their confidence in Alstom and we have been able to honour their trust for his benefits.” says Anders Maltesen, General Manager of Tianjin Alstom Hydro.

“This runner is the first of 6 units, we have a long road in front of us to complete the Son La contract which is a vital importance in meeting Vietnam’s growing energy needs. We are all confident, the aim of providing around 10 billion kWh per year to meet a significant part of Vietnam’s energy needs is a true motivation for the entire manufacturing team in our Tianjin facility in China, who we take the opportunity to thank.

As Alstom’s largest hydro installation base in the world, Tianjin Alstom Hydro is capable of manufacturing and supplying the largest hydro turbine-generator units (up to 1,000 MW). It not only serves the China market but export its equipment and expertise to other Asian countries like Vietnam and Burma.
“Tianjin Alstom Hydro has become a key player in China and Asian markets. As the largest power generation supplier to the Three Gorges Project, we have provided 14 turbines and generators units among the total of 26 units. Tianjin Alstom Hydro is also supplying 4x800MW francis hydro turbine and generator units to the Xiangjiaba project, which is the biggest unit under construction in the world as per unit capacity. We are pleased to see the successful delivery of the first runner to the Son La project in Vietnam, which further reinforces Alstom’s capability from ’Made in China’ to ‘Made with China’,” said Claude Burckbuchler, Alstom China President.

“The Vietnam Government and its people pay special attention to the Son La project, and His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai also served in person the Chairman of the State Steering Committee. We have chosen Alstom based on our confidence in Alstom’s world leading technologies and unrivalled expertise in hydro speciality. Today's on-timely delivery of the first runner is a key milestone in the Son La project, which will play a significant role in alleviating the shortage of electric energy in Vietnam, in addition to facilitating the socio-economic development of the country in the coming decades. The completion and commercial operation of Son La HPP's first unit has been significantly chosen as a Good Deed of Work for EVN to celebrate during their 11th National Congress of CPV - the country's leading Party - taking place in early 2011. We believe that with close cooperation between Alstom's and EVN's project teams we shall attain this high-profile target,” said Mr. Vu Duc Thin, Member of EVN's Executive Management Board.

"Alstom Vietnam takes great pride in supporting Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) in the most important and largest hydropower project in Vietnam. This milestone achievement in Son La contract execution reinforces Alstom's capability to serve one of the most dynamic markets with the right technologies and the right solutions as well as meeting the demand for Clean Power.", said Mr. Lam Minh, Alstom Power Country Sales Director for Vietnam.
