Son La Hydro Power Plant Unit 2 achieved commercial operation on 20th April 2011, following the successful synchronisation to Vietnam power grid. First start of Unit 2 turbine had been conducted on 12th April 2011, 10 days ahead of schedule.

This success adds another key milestone to the excellent track record of the Son La hydro electric plant project in Vietnam, and follows closely Unit 1’s successful commercial operation just four months ago. It also reinforces Alstom’s achievement in meeting reliability and performance tests for Unit 2’s mechanical design, manufacture and erection ahead of schedule, as well as securing customer's and authorities full satisfaction.

Director of Son La Management Board, Mr. Ha said, “The good record we have achieved is due to excellent cooperation among the Son La HPP staff, various contractors and reliable delivery of Alstom’s scope. We must continue our efforts on the other 4 units to uphold the plant’s completion schedule.”

Michel Burtin, Alstom Country President Vietnam said, “ I would wish to congratulate EVN, Son La Power Project Management Board and all involved teams in this Unit 2’s success. Entering the dry season period with increasing fears over power shortages, Alstom’s on time delivery performance and high reliability is even more important . These successes reinforces Alstom’s Hydro leadership in Vietnam and the region. We look to continued opportunities to support Vietnam’s energy growth with Alstom’s technology and expertise for other fuels too.”

Construction on Electricity Vietnam’s 2,400MW Son La Hydro Power Plant started five years ago. Under the contract, Alstom was awarded the scope of supplying (including design), engineering, manufacturing and delivery of six 400 MW Francis turbines and generators, BOP (Balance Of Plant) as well as training and supervision of installation, testing and commissioning. When completed in 2014, Son La HPP is expected to generate 10.2 billion kWh of electricity annually to support the nation's demand, especially the north west region where development is targeted.

About Alstom

Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies.
