Vietnam to cooperate with UNIDO in promoting Energy Efficiency in Industry

<p style="text-align: justify;">On the afternoon of May 18th, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) signed cooperation documents on the implementation of the project "Promoting energy efficiency in industry through optimizing energy systems and management standards in Vietnam".</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;">The ceremony had the participation of Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong, Mr. Patrick J. Gilabert, UNIDO Representative in Vietnam and representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Energy Efficiency Office.<br />

The project is designed to propose a method to optimize the control system for industrial businesses to save energy in the entire manufacturing system while improving the capacity of industrial businesses to apply the ISO 50001 standard on energy management, to make energy saving become a part of the management cycle of businesses. According to estimates, the potential of energy saving by optimizing the system can be up to 25%.<br />

Being put into implementation from May 2011, the project will take place in 3.5 years under the management of the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Energy Efficiency Office, with the total expense of up to $ 6,625,000. In which, the GEF’s funding is $ 945,000, $ 80,000 is funded by UNIDO and the rest is reciprocal capital of Vietnam.<br />

The project shall prioritize the development of capacity for parties, including producers, suppliers, equipment distributors, companies providing energy consultancy services and policy makers.<br />

In addition, the project shall support a number of industries which consume much energy, such as food processing, textile, rubber, paper and pulp, in training domestic experts on energy management, training 150 engineers and officials on production system optimizing, implementing 25 demonstration projects of optimizing the system ..., and develop the capacity of integrating energy management into production management system of enterprises through the introduction of ISO 50001 standard, creating conditions to support enterprises in enhancing energy efficiency.<br />

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong appreciated the support and cooperation of GEF and UNIDO in recent times. He believed that with effective coordination, the project would be successful, contribute to achieving the goal of improving energy efficiency in industry and to the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of Vietnam's industry.<br />
