Ceremony marks power plant completion

An inauguration ceremony was held Sunday for the Nhon Trach 1 thermo power plant that will add between 2.2 billion and 2.5 billion kilowatt hours a year to the national electricity grid.

The 462.8 megawatt plant, invested by the PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power), will be mainly fed by natural gas from the offshore Cuu Long and Nam Con Son basins in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Construction of the VND6.5 trillion (US$365.8 million) facility in southern Dong Nai Province started in 2007.

Work on the 750MW Nhon Trach 2 started two months ago, PV Power Chief Executive Nguyen Thanh Liem said. The power plant is expected to be operational in 2011, generating 4.5 billion kWh a year.
