The Fuhrlaender Wind Power Joint Stock Company will invest 25 million USD in building a wind-turbine factory in Tuy Phong district, central Binh Thuan province, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

According to President of Fuhrlaender Vietnam, Tran Viet Tuan, in the first phase, the 23ha plant will produce 48 turbines of 1.5MW and 48 others of 2.5MW in the second phase, raising its total capacity to 192MW.

The plant’s turbines will be provided for wind power projects in Vietnam and for export, he added.

Fuhrlaender will also offer technical training for wind power workers nationwide and build supporting industrial plants, Tuan said.

The first five turbines with a total capacity of 7.5MW of a 2 trillion wind power project in Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province have been installed by Fuhrlaender and are going to join the national grid in late August.

The project’s investor Renewable Energy of Vietnam Joint Stock Company (REVN) will install seven more turbines to reach a capacity of 18 MW in the first phase.

The plant, which will be added with 80 more turbines to raise its total capacity to 120MW, is expected to come into operation in 2011.

According to a World Bank’s survey, Vietnam has a capacity to produce 513,360 MW of wind power, which translates into 200 times the output of the Southeast Asia’s largest hydropower plant, Son La and 10 folds over Vietnam’s total forecast power capacity by 2020.
