Seriously lack power supply for production and consumption in Phu Quoc

In Phu Quoc district island (Kien Giang), the current total capacity of 12 MW is insufficient to meet the increasing demand of power in recent months because there are many domestic as well as foreign-invested projects in Phu Quoc.
Lately, the province along with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has surveyed and set up the project on providing power for Phu Quoc, in which the investment strategy of submarine cable from Kien Luong to Phu Quoc with the total length of 45m and the invested capital of around VND 1,000 billion is considered the most feasible one by investors from China, Belgium and Poland. However, the project has not been carried out yet. If the problem of power generation shortage is not solved as soon as possible, Phu Quoc will not only encounter difficulties in production and consumption but also distract investment from outside.

Whereas, the electricity tariff for production and consumption in Phu Quoc district island has risen to VND 3,000 or even VND 3,500/kWh for years. Nevertheless, the electricity tariff has been cut down a little to VND 1,200/kWh, which is twice higher than that in the mainland. This is not to mention production or business households and tourism service providers who still have to accept the high electricity tariff. The present power generation supplying Phu Quoc is chiefly based on 4 diesel substations which cost a lot. The average electricity tariff of VND 1,200/kWh compensates just 50% of the power production cost. Therefore, on the average, the local budget has to reimburse approximately VND 60 billion annually.
