According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), power demand in the domestic market is highly increasing. EVN estimated that, by 2008, the demand will have rocketed by 15%, which equals to 700,200,000,000 kWh.
In order to satisfy the needs of power, EVN will buy from China about 2.5 billion kWh to 2.9 billion kWh to prevent the power shortage in Northern area. Moreover, EVN regularly privatizes power plants, lists stocks on the stock exchange in an effort to attract investment in power sector.
EVN will need more than USD 40 billion in the next 8 coming years to invest in constructing new power plans, those should supplying 33,000 kWh in addition so as to meet the increasing demand of Vietnamese industry. EVN added that, at present, there are 10 foreign investors setting up projects on investing in power companies in Vietnam, which is a good signal for Vietnam’s power sector.
* Hung Yen’s power company are implementing 2 projects on medium-voltage network rehabilitation with the total cost of more than EUR 3 million and VND 20 billion. After finishing, these 2 projects will help to upgrade and expand medium-voltage network, which will improve the quality of power supply, security and lessen power loss. This will satisfy the power demand for socio-economic development in the locality in the forth coming time.
Among them, the project on rural grid rehabilitation in Hung Yen (IVO) has the invested capital of over EUR 3 million in order to construct, revitalize 157 substations and 77 km of medium-voltage line for 86 communes; and the project on rural energy II has the invested capital of more than VND 20 billion focusing on erecting 45 substations and 32 km of medium-voltage line, etc.
*The Ministry of Industry and Trade has just approved the project on constructing 3 coal-fired thermal power companies in Soc Trang which is invested by EVN. The project has the invested capital of more than VND 5 billion and the capacity of 4,400 MW is built in Long Phu province. As anticipated, Long Phu 1 company with the capacity of 1,200 MW will be started constructing in 2008 and completed in 2012. And Long Phu 2 with the capacity of 1,200 MW and Long Phu 3 with the capacity of 2,000 MW will be built after Long Phu 1 is put into operation.
