China: Carry out Nam Tha hydropower I project

Southern China Power Transmission Company (CSG) expect to carry out Nam Tha I hydropower project in next March with the construction of a 40 km road connecting R3 Street with the dam area in Phaoudom district, Bokeo province to transport necessary equipments to the construction site.

                       

As said by Mr. Liu Jian, Vice Project Manager of Nam Tha I, the construction of the street may take about 6 months to complete. After that, CSG will build the main categories of the project, including the hydropower dam, the hydropower plant and the spillway. The construction of the hydropower dam will take about 4 weeks and the company will start producing power in 2012.
Nam Tha I has 3 generating units with the installed capacity of 168 MW and the investment of about KIP 3.1 billion, approximately USD 340 million. The shareholders of the projects compose of CSG and Lao Government. After the project is finished, CSG will operate the company for 30 years.
Evaluating the project, Vice Chairman of Lao Environment and Water Resource Department, Mr. Sisavath Vitaxay said that Nam Tha I project would be an important power generation in the power network of Northern Laos, meeting the demand of local population’s consumption and the mining industry. Besides, power production could also be sold to Thailand.
