China is now concentrating on developing nuclear power through the third generation nuclear piles which have not only long service life but also high level of security.

China has the plan to 2020 to raise the nuclear power capacity up to 40,000 MW, accounting for 4% of the entire power output in the country.

Last year, China signed the contract with Areva Company (France) to install two nuclear piles with the capacity of 1,700 MW each in Guangdong province in 2009.

Also in 2007, China implemented the contract signed with Westinghouse Electric Company (The United States) to install four nuclear piles in Zhejiang and Shandong.

For the time being, China has 11 nuclear piles which are operating with the total capacity of 8,000 MW.
