On March 11, the authority of People Committee of Khanh Hoa province and Vietnam Energy Institute attended a conference to listen to the report on the planning of Van Phong power center in the combined economic zone of this region.

Before that, Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) registered to invest in the coal-fired thermal power company with the total capacity of 2,640 MW on the area of 175ha in My Giang village (Ninh Thuy commune, Ninh Hoa district in the South of Van Phong Gulf). According to the Planning and Investment Ministry, the entire investment for this project is USD 3.8 billion.

Sumitomo Corporation has signed a contract with Vietnam Energy Institute to examine the topography and the geological subsurface to set up the project and submit to the Government. As said by the management staff of Van Phong Combined Economic Zone (Khanh Hoa), the province has submitted the Sumitomo’s project procedures to the Prime Minister and relevant Ministries.

According to the plan of Vietnamese power sector, there had been no projects on thermal power plants in Van Phong Gulf area before. However, apart from Sumitomo’s project as mentioned, the Prime Minister has recently approved the policy that allows Posco Corporation (Korea) – Vinashin to build up a steel factory along with coal-fired power company with the maximum capacity of 1,000 MW in Hon Gom – Dam Mon in the North of van Phong Gulf.
