As revealed by a French news agency called AFP, Cambodia will construct dams which are financed by China as a part of the plan to supply electricity for China, a Southeast Asian nation which is badly in need of electricity. Accordingly, Cambodia will put 9 hydropower dams into operation from 2010 to 2019 to produce 1,942 MW of power. Among those dams, there will be at least four of them are financed by Chinese government.
In 2007, the organization of “International River System” which had headquarter in the United States unveiled that two hydropower dams, namely Kkamchay and Stung Atay, which were financed by China and were being constructed, threatened vast protective forests in Cambodia with floods.
Kamchay Hydropower Company is expected to operate in 2010 and Stung Atay Hydropower Company will be inaugurated in 2012.
Moreover, Cambodian government also plans to construct 9 coal-fired thermal power plants from 2011 to 2020.
Cambodia is trying its best so that by 2020, all villages in this country will have connected to electricity and by 2030, at least 70% of the Cambodian households will have used electricity in comparison to 20% at present.
