The ground-breaking ceremony of Ly Son thermo-electric power plant.
The plant, the first of its kind in Ly Son island district, is part of the Government’s projects on developing the electricity grid in the country’s sea and island areas.

The two-turbine plant has a total capacity of 6 MW, equipped with Circulating Fluidizing Bed (CFB) technology. Dust coal transported from Hon Gai, Cam Pha, Quang Ninh province is used as fuel for the plant. A total amount of VND 237.4 billion is invested in the plant. The Ly Son plant is expected to join the national grid in 2011 and generate over 3 million kWh of commercial electricity annually.

Doan Van Kien the Chaiman of TKV’s Board of Directors said: The plant plays an important role in socio-economic development and national defence and security. Also, the plant can meet the needs of inhabitants for electricity and contributes to industrial development, tourism and particularly for the aqua-processing sector on the Ly Son island. In the coming time, TKV will start works on other thermo-electric power plants in Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Co To (Quang Ninh) and so on.

Currently, inhabitants in Ly Son island district can only use electricity from 5 – 11pm every two days. The electricity is being generated from a small diesel generator and the commercial electricity price is put at high price of over VND 7,000 a kWh.
