Over half a million of British people in Cheshire, Liverpool and Lincolnshire had to live without electricity on May 27th because seven power generation substations which belonged to the biggest Power Distribution Company - British Energy - broke down. This has been the worst power cut incident in Britain for the past decade.
Owing to power cut, some surgery in the hospitals in High Wycombe town which is about 40 miles to the Northwest of London had to be cancelled. This was because several emergent power generators were blown out. Some shopping centers also suffered from the power cut. A number of households in the South of London were out of electricity and some people got stuck in the elevator.
Currently, the causes leading to the fact that many power generators broke down at the same time have not been found. However, according to David Porter, the Managing Director of the Association of power producers in Britain, this might be an accidental coincidence.
British Energy is at present concentrating on preparing for the procurement for the construction of some new nuclear power plants after it has received the approval from British Government. For the time being, there are three candidates registering to construct new nuclear power plants in Britain, namely EDF (France), Iberdrola (Spain) and RWE (Germany). All of the three mentioned corporations are participating in activities relating to power production and business in Britain.
