Buying power from Ca Mau, EVN suffers from loss

In a meeting with Vietnam News Agency, the CEO of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) Pham Le Thanh said that with the average electricity tariffs for households of 842dong/kWh as currently regulated, EVN could hardly buy power at the price of 4.54 cent/kWh, which equals to 720 dong, of Ca Mau One Member Limited Liability Petroleum Power Company (Vietnam Oil and Gas Group).

According to Mr. Thanh, even at the price 4.54 cent/kWh set by ca Mau, EVN suffers the loss up to VND 1,600 billion, let alone the price 5 cent/kWh when the gas price is raised. At present, out of 1kWh sold to households, EVN has to invest 280 dong/kWh for transmission, distribution and power loss costs. Hence, the power tariffs for households’ consumption will be 1,000 dong/kWh with the buying price of power at about 720 dong/kWh.

And also, Mr. Thanh said that EVN had signed the Contract of temporary payment for the power output that Ca Mau had generated on the network since April. At the same time, EVN submitted to the Prime Minister to tickle the problem.

Before that time, on September 26th, Government Office has released the Announcement No. 184 disseminating the ideas from the Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai. According to this Announcement, the price and contract for Ca Mau power Project is subject to the Ministry of Finance in keeping with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to submit to the Prime Minister to reach a decision.
